William Smith, University College Dublin, Ireland

Having graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering from University College Dublin in 1986, William Smith was awarded a PhD by the National University of Ireland in 1992 for his thesis on “The effects of turbulence on combustion in direct-injection diesel engines”. This was followed by two years as a postdoctoral researcher at University College Dublin, before joining the academic staff and continues to work today.

His research focused initially on combustion in internal-combustion engines, but in the past ten years has turned, increasingly, towards solid-fuel combustion, encompassing wood-pellet boilers, domestic solid-fuel stoves, and open fireplaces. His particular interest is in improving the understanding of NOx and particulate (PM) emissions from these sources.

He became Ireland’s representative to Task 32 in June 2015.
